Enhance Your Skin with Beautifying Cosmetic Dermatology

Cosmetic Surgery

CosmeticCosmetic surgery is a subspecialty that uniquely restricts itself to the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. It is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it toward some aesthetic ideal. Cosmetic surgery is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach directed to all areas of the head, neck, and body.

Cosmetic surgery is provided by surgeons from a variety of disciplines including board certified dermatologists, ophthalmologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, and physicians from other fields. All of these disciplines have contributed to the vital growth of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Levine is a fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and has obtained extensive training and clinical experience in all cosmetic surgery procedures he performs. His expertise in many areas from non-invasive procedures to more elaborate surgeries ensures that you are provided with many options and the optimal choices for your area of concern. All cosmetic consultations are complimentary.

The mini-face lift procedure is for those over 40 years of age who want to stay ahead of the aging process. It provides an overall lift to the face and neck with a fast recovery, small incisions, a low risk of complications, and immediate results. The mini-face lift can erase five to ten years from your face and neck.

The mini-face lift is an outpatient procedure performed using local anesthetic and takes about three hours to perform. A small incision is made starting at the upper side-burn area, extending behind the tragus of the ear to the ear lobe and then into the crease behind the ear toward the hairline. The underlying connective tissue is tightened, the excess skin is tailored, and the incision is carefully closed using a detailed suturing technique that is designed to reduce tension and minimize scarring.

The recovery from the mini-face lift is much faster than a traditional face lift with most patients returning to their normal routine within seven to ten days. Although a prescription for pain medication is provided, most patients say Tylenol is all they need to alleviate any discomfort. Some patients may experience slight, temporary bruising, which may be camouflaged with makeup. To minimize postoperative swelling, patients should apply cold compresses for the first two days and sleep with their head elevated for the first week. Results are immediate as the procedure tightens the cheeks, jaw line, nasolabial and marionette folds, and neck. The mini-face lift can be combined simultaneously with other procedures such as facial-neck liposuction, forehead thread lifting, blepharoplasty, and skin-resurfacing procedures.

Brow Lift

Eye Brow Lifts

If you are bothered by expression lines or other signs of aging in the brow region, a brow lift by Dr. Levine may be right for you. A brow lift minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead or those that occur high on the bridge of the nose, between the eyes. It improves frown lines, the vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows, and can reposition a low or sagging brow that is hooding the upper eyelid while raising the eyebrows to a more alert and youthful position.

Brow lifts come in several iterations:

Endoscopic Brow Lifts

The endoscopic brow lift technique consists of placing a series of 2 to 4 small incisions in the scalp behind the hairline. Inserted into these incisions is an endoscope, a thin, elongated tube with a small light that is connected to a camera. This special instrument allows Dr. Levine to modify the muscles and achieve the proper brow position, maintained by suture fixation. No scalp skin is excised.

Trichophytic (Hairline) Brow Lift

The Trichophytic (hairline) brow lift is done with an incision made only a few millimeters in size that is placed directly in the hairline in a wavy fashion, camouflaging the incision. By incorporating the extreme bevel, the hair follicles can regrow through the scar, making it virtually imperceptible after several months. Skin is removed from the non-hair-baring portion of the forehead. The brows are elevated while the hairline is not. This approach does not raise the hairline.

What an Eyebrow Lift Can Do

Rejuvenation procedures typically performed by Dr. Levine in conjunction with a brow lift include eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes (blepharoplasty), a facelift to correct aging changes in the mid- to lower face and neck regions and skin resurfacing techniques.

Eyelid Tuck (Blepharoplasty)

Our eyes are usually the first thing that people notice about us, and, unfortunately, often the first part of our face to show the signs of aging. Hooded upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes age the face and make you look more tired than you actually feel. Blepharoplasty by Dr. Richard Levine can rejuvenate the eyes by removing loose skin from the upper eyelids and fat from both the upper and lower lids.

Blepharoplasty is performed in the office under local anesthetic. On the upper eyelid, an initial incision is made along the eyelid crease, then an additional incision is made higher along the eyelid. The distance between the two incisions depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Fat removal, when needed, is intentionally conservative to avoid a sunken look after surgery. The skin edges are closed using sutures to transform, reposition, and/or deepen the eyelid crease. On the lower eyelid, an incision is made through the inside of the lid and excess fat is removed. The incision may be closed with one or two dissolving sutures, but more commonly no stitches are used.

Stitches, if any, are typically removed in five to seven days after the procedure and recovery time is about one week. The results last for years, opening the eyes and making them look bright and alert, giving you a more youthful and rested appearance.

After blepharoplasty surgery, the eyes will often be lubricated and covered with bandages. Pain and discomfort can be managed with oral medications. Sunglasses and a protective sunblock are required for several weeks. Normal activities can be resumed after about 10 days. Strenuous activities such as lifting, bending, or exercise can be resumed after about 3 weeks.

Liposuction Fat Removal Using Tumescent Liposculpture

Liposuction is a method of removing fat from parts of the body that have not responded to diet or exercise. It is not a method of losing weight, but a contouring procedure resulting in a loss of inches, not pounds. Tumescent liposculpture is a specialized liposuction procedure used by Dr. Levine that can be performed under local anesthetic, greatly reducing post-operative discomfort and recovery time.

Tumescent liposuction can be performed on the abdomen, hips, back, inner and outer thighs, knees, arms, face, and neck. It is the safest form of liposuction because a local rather than a general anesthetic is used. Local anesthetic is injected into the treatment area causing the fat to become swollen or “tumescent.” The tumescence allows Dr. Levine to guide instruments called cannulas under the skin more smoothly and more accurately. Cannulas are long, thin tubes that are attached to a suction machine. The cannula is inserted through tiny incisions and the fatty deposits are suctioned away.

Another benefit of tumescent liposuction is less post-operative bleeding and bruising. Most patients can resume their normal activities within two or three days after the procedure.

Facial Volume Enhancement Fat Transfer (FAMI)

Facial Autograft Muscle Injection or FAMI is a non-surgical fat transfer procedure performed by Dr. Levine to rejuvenate facial volume deficiency. FAMI uses the body’s own material to restore facial fullness and firmness. The procedure involves removing fat from one area of the body by mini-liposuction and re-injecting it above and into the plane of the facial muscles. The fat is used to plump up and contour areas of the face that have lost volume through aging.

Losing facial volume is a common side effect to aging. One cause is the loss of collagen, which gives the appearance of sagging and/or slightly sunken areas. Repairing facial volume loss due to muscle shrinkage generally requires a fat transfer procedure like FAMI.

FAMI delivers long-lasting results that include a symmetrical, fuller, and more youthful appearance. A transfer of your own fat is not perceived as a foreign substance by your body, so FAMI presents no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection. The injections can fill in depressed areas of the face like the hollows under the eyes, flattened cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, and chin. It can also enhance facial features such as the cheekbones, jaw line, eyebrow area, and lips.

Fat is typically taken from the abdomen, outer thigh, or inner knee area. After numbing the treatment area, tiny drops of the fat are re-injected above and into the facial muscle plane giving both your skin and your features a boost. Results are immediate and usually last for many years. In addition, it is a natural way to enhance your face without the risks associated with invasive procedures like a surgical face lift.

Scar Revision

There are a number of techniques available to make scars look less obvious—everything from Restylane® or steroid injections to laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, and surgical revision. The best treatment method will depend on several factors including the nature and severity of the scar, the thickness and color of your skin, and how you were treated medically. Even the direction of your scar will make a difference.
